How to Get Your Garage Ready for Floor Coating

A garage floor project is easier to plan when you think beyond the color. Where will the freezer go? Can you still reach the house without crossing the floor? When can the car come back inside? For homeowners in Beckley, Southern West Virginia, and our Southwest Virginia service area, sorting out those details before installation helps keep the project organized.

Use this checklist to prepare for your garage floor coating project. Your written project plan should confirm the exact scope and timing for your garage.

Clear the floor—and plan where everything goes

Make a list of vehicles, shelving, rolling cabinets, appliances, lawn equipment, and loose storage. Agree in advance which items you will move and whether any fixed cabinets or equipment will remain. Do not assume moving heavy items or disconnecting appliances is included in the flooring estimate.

Choose a secure, weather-protected storage spot that leaves the driveway and work access usable. Put everyday essentials somewhere you can reach without entering the garage: pet food, school bags, tools, and anything stored in a refrigerator or freezer. Plan an alternate route into the house for the whole household.

Tell us what has been on the concrete

Share anything you know about old paint, sealers, DIY coatings, oil spills, and previous repairs. Send a wide photo of each bay and close-ups of peeling areas, cracks, and the garage entrance. If water appears after rain or collects in a particular area, mention when and where it happens.

Photos help start the conversation, but they do not replace evaluating the actual slab. Leave grinding, coating removal, and repair decisions to the agreed project plan. Before trying a new cleaner, pressure washing, or applying a patch, ask whether it fits the planned preparation. A last-minute treatment can change what the installer needs to assess.

Agree on the edges, steps, and transitions

Walk through the garage and identify exactly where the finish should stop. Discuss raised borders, entry steps, exposed block, the door threshold, and any apron outside the garage. Mark which surfaces belong in the estimate instead of assuming every adjoining surface receives the same treatment.

This is also the time to discuss joints, damaged edges, and expectations for the finished appearance. Compare a physical color sample and talk through the desired texture. See our flooring cost guide for the kinds of project details that affect scope and pricing.

Separate installation time from return-to-use time

Epoxy King’s flake system uses a two-day installation process. That does not mean every activity can resume as soon as the crew finishes. Ask for separate instructions for walking, returning storage, and parking vehicles. The installed products and site conditions determine those milestones.

Manufacturer guidance distinguishes cure speeds and environmental conditions; there is no single timetable that fits every coating. Keep parking and storage arrangements flexible until your installer confirms the handover instructions. Do not use a dry-looking surface as permission to drive onto it.

Make access and the handover straightforward

Before the start date, confirm the arrival window, driveway access, power needs, door access, and who to contact with questions. Arrange to keep children, pets, and visitors outside the work area. Ask how the garage should be secured between installation visits.

At handover, keep the written care and return-to-use instructions somewhere easy to find. Ask about suitable cleaning products, moving heavy items, and what to do if you notice a concern. A short conversation now is more useful than guessing later.
